Annuals are one of the easiest ways to add instant color to a garden. At Details Landscape Art, we primarily design and install landscapes using trees, shrubs, groundcovers, vines, and perennials that provide long-term beauty. Our philosophy is to create “Gardens for Life” that mature gracefully over time.
Annuals add a splash of instant color to the garden
Occasionally, however, homeowners want a splash of seasonal color that can be changed throughout the year. That’s where annuals come in.
What Are Annuals?
They are plants that complete their entire life cycle within a single growing season. They germinate, grow, flower, produce seed, and die within one year.
This differs from:
- Biennials, which require two years to complete their life cycle.
- Perennials, which return year after year.
The distinction can sometimes be confusing because climate plays an important role. Some plants treated as annuals in colder regions may survive for many years in Northern California. Salvias, for example, are often perennial here but may be grown as annuals in colder climates.
Why Use Annuals?
Annuals provide benefits that permanent plantings sometimes cannot.
They offer:
- Instant color
- Long bloom periods
- Seasonal variety
- Flexibility in design
- Opportunities to experiment with new color combinations
We often use them to brighten entryways, patio containers, garden borders, and special focal points throughout the landscape.

Cool-Season Annuals
In Sonoma County, many can be planted in fall for winter and spring color.
Some of our favorites include:
Iberis
A dependable cool-season bloomer that provides bright flowers during cooler weather.
Dianthus
Available in a variety of colors, dianthus performs well during the mild North Bay winter and spring seasons.
Primula
Primroses provide cheerful color in shaded areas during winter and early spring.
Chrysanthemums
Certain varieties perform particularly well during cooler weather and provide vibrant seasonal displays.
Cyclamen
Although technically perennial tuberous plants, we often use cyclamen as seasonal color in shaded garden areas. Their bright flowers and attractive foliage make them one of our favorite winter selections.
Warm-Season Annuals
These plants thrive during spring, summer, and fall.
Many are sensitive to frost and perform best during warmer weather.
Some of our favorites include:
Impatiens
One of the best for shade, impatiens provide months of reliable color.
Verbena
A colorful flowering plant that performs well in sunny locations and attracts pollinators.
Lobelia
Known for its vibrant blue flowers, lobelia adds color and softness to planting beds and containers.
Scabiosa
This long-bloomer provides unique flowers that attract butterflies and beneficial insects.
Sweet Alyssum
A low-growing favorite that produces masses of fragrant flowers and works well along borders and pathways.
Preparing the Soil for Annuals
Like all successful plantings, annuals perform best when the soil is properly prepared.
We recommend loosening the soil thoroughly and incorporating compost or organic matter before planting. Healthy soil promotes stronger roots, better flowering, and improved plant vigor.
Most are purchased as nursery-grown plants in six-packs, four-inch pots, or one-gallon containers. This provides an immediate display of color while giving the plants a head start in the garden.
Caring for Annuals
Annuals require regular watering to perform their best.
The soil should remain consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and moderate soil temperatures.
Deadheading spent flowers is also important. Removing faded blooms encourages continued flowering and keeps the plants looking fresh and attractive.
Adding Seasonal Color to the Garden
While trees, shrubs, and perennials provide the framework of a beautiful landscape, annuals offer an opportunity to introduce changing colors throughout the year.
Whether planted in containers, garden beds, or special accent areas, they can provide months of color and enjoyment.

At Details Landscape Art, we occasionally incorporate annuals into our landscape designs to create seasonal displays that complement the permanent structure of the garden while providing additional beauty and interest.
