Seat walls are one of those landscape features that homeowners often don’t think about until they see one incorporated into a finished garden. At Details Landscape Art, we frequently recommend seat walls as part of a patio design because they provide both practical function and visual appeal.Seat wall adjacent to patio adds interest and serves as retaining wall                   Seat wall adjacent to patio adds interest and serves as retaining wall

A well-designed patio should do more than simply provide a place for a table and chairs. It should encourage people to gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. Seat walls help accomplish that goal by creating additional seating while adding structure and character to the landscape.

Why We Recommend Seat Walls

One of the challenges of outdoor entertaining is providing enough seating for guests. Folding chairs work, but they are not always attractive and often end up cluttering the patio when not in use.

A seat wall solves this problem beautifully.

Whether located around the perimeter of a patio or incorporated into a raised planter, the wall provides permanent seating without taking up valuable patio space. It can frame a dining area, define an outdoor room, or break up a larger expanse of paving with an attractive vertical element.

We also like the way seat walls create a sense of enclosure. Much like the walls of a room inside the home, they help define outdoor living spaces and make them feel more comfortable and inviting.

Constructing Seat Walls

The construction begins with a solid foundation.

Most seat walls are built using either reinforced concrete or cinder block construction. The base wall is typically six inches thick and approximately sixteen inches high. Sixteen to seventeen inches is considered comfortable seating height for most people.

If the wall is being used as a retaining wall to hold back a slope, the same construction techniques are used, although the finished height may be greater than a typical seating wall.

The length of the wall depends upon the size of the patio and the homeowner’s entertaining needs. Some projects require only a short section of seating, while others may incorporate long walls capable of accommodating large gatherings.

Stone Choices and Finishes

Once the structural wall has been completed, it is faced with either natural stone or cultured stone.

The individual pieces are carefully cut and fitted together much like a puzzle before being mortared into place. We use Mason’s Mix along with bonding additives that help ensure long-term durability.

Homeowners are often surprised by the number of available stone choices. There are hundreds of colors, textures, and styles available from manufacturers and suppliers throughout Northern California.

When selecting stone, we are careful to coordinate the wall with other hardscape elements in the garden. A successful landscape should feel cohesive rather than a collection of unrelated materials.

Flagstone remains one of our favorite materials. Arizona flagstone, Connecticut Bluestone, Multi-Blend, and Wyoming Chocolate all provide beautiful options depending on the desired appearance.

The Importance of the Cap

The top of the wall is capped with stone that provides both comfort and protection.

We typically use one-and-a-half-inch-thick flagstone that complements the wall facing. The sharp edges are rounded with a grinder to create a smooth, comfortable seating surface.

When combined with the sixteen-inch base wall, the finished height usually falls between seventeen-and-a-half and eighteen inches, which is ideal seating height.

It’s a small detail, but one that makes a tremendous difference in comfort.

A Beautiful Finishing Touch

One of our favorite looks is placing plant material behind a seat wall and allowing selected plants to spill gently over the edge.

Ground covers, ornamental grasses, and flowering perennials can soften the masonry and help blend the wall naturally into the surrounding landscape.

The result is a feature that feels as though it belongs in the garden rather than simply being placed there.

and creates a stronger sense of outdoor living space. Properly constructed, it will endure for decades and continue to serve both functional and aesthetic purposes throughout the life of the garden.
