For thousands of years, Asian gardens—and particularly Japanese gardens—have incorporated the soothing sound of running water. There is something inherently calming about moving water. Whether it is a gently bubbling fountain, a meandering creek, or a cascading waterfall, water features bring a sense of tranquility and relaxation to the garden.

At Details Landscape Art, we frequently recommend water features as a way to add beauty, sound, movement, and interest to the landscape. They can range from simple birdbaths and fountains to elaborate streams, waterfalls, and koi ponds.
Why Homeowners Love Water Features
Most landscape elements appeal primarily to the eye. Water appeals to several senses at once.
The sound of moving water helps mask traffic noise and neighborhood distractions. It attracts birds and other wildlife, creates movement within the garden, and often becomes a natural focal point.
Water features can be incorporated into almost any style of landscape. We have installed them in Asian-inspired gardens, natural woodland settings, Mediterranean landscapes, and traditional residential gardens throughout Sonoma County.
From Simple Fountains to Streams and Ponds
There are countless options available for homeowners.
Many people begin with a decorative fountain or birdbath. Beautiful pieces are available through local garden centers, specialty suppliers, and online sources. Fountains range from traditional stone designs to contemporary sculptural pieces that function as both artwork and water feature.
For larger projects, we often design and build complete pond and waterfall systems.
Depending on the topography, a stream may wind through the landscape before spilling into a pond below. In other situations, a pondless waterfall may be the perfect solution. These systems use a hidden underground reservoir, allowing homeowners to enjoy the sound and appearance of moving water without maintaining a visible pond.
Building Natural-Looking Water Features
One of our goals is to make water features look as though they belong in the landscape.
We use large placement boulders, moss-covered stones, river rock, cobbles, gravel, and driftwood to create a natural appearance. The finished water feature should appear as though it has always been there.
Streams often include multiple spill rocks, changes in direction, and varying water depths to create visual interest and more natural water movement.
The surrounding plant material is equally important. Ornamental grasses, ferns, rushes, and other moisture-loving plants help soften the edges and blend the feature into the garden.
Water Features with Koi Ponds
Koi ponds add another level of beauty and interest.
Koi bring the water feature to life!
The colorful fish become part of the landscape and are often surprisingly interactive. Many homeowners enjoy feeding them and watching them move through the water.
When a pond contains fish, proper filtration becomes critical. Biological filtration systems help maintain healthy water conditions and support beneficial bacteria that contribute to the overall health of the pond.
Koi ponds do require additional maintenance. Water clarity, filtration, algae control, and water quality all require periodic attention. For homeowners willing to provide that care, however, koi can become one of the most enjoyable aspects of the garden.
Plants Around the Water’s Edge
Plant material plays an important role in the success of a water feature.
Plants enhance the water feature
Some of our favorite plants for moist conditions include:
- Tulbaghia violacea (Society Garlic)
- Tulbaghia ‘Silver Lace’

- Juncus (Rush)
- Water Lilies

- Ferns
- Ornamental Grasses
These plants soften the edges, provide seasonal color, and help create a more natural appearance.
Bringing the Garden to Life
At Details Landscape Art, we believe the most successful gardens combine a variety of elements. Wood structures, patios, walkways, masonry, beautiful plantings, and garden art each contribute to the overall experience.
Water adds something unique that no other landscape element can provide—the soothing sound of nature.
Whether it is a simple fountain tucked into a quiet corner or a dramatic waterfall cascading into a koi pond, water features bring beauty, movement, and tranquility to the garden for years to come.
