The height of the gate often matches the height of the fence, although we occasionally build gates that extend slightly above the fence to create additional visual interest.

Building Redwood Gates
Proper construction is critical because gates are subjected to frequent use and considerable stress.
One of the most common causes of gate failure is excessive width. To minimize sagging, we generally recommend keeping a gate width to approximately three and one-half feet whenever practical.
When constructing the fence, the gate opening must be carefully planned. The gate posts should be perfectly plumb and spaced accurately to allow the gate to swing freely while maintaining consistent clearances.
The gate frame is typically built using sturdy redwood framing members assembled into a rigid rectangular structure. A diagonal brace is then installed to provide additional strength and help resist sagging over time.
Once the frame is complete, redwood fence boards are attached to create the finished appearance.
Preventing Gate Sag
Gravity is constantly working against every gate.
Over time, poorly constructed gates can sag, drag on the ground, or become difficult to open and close.
Proper framing, diagonal bracing, quality hardware, and appropriate gate width all help prevent these problems.
For gates that are wider than they are tall, additional reinforcement may be required. In certain situations, gate-sag kits can provide extra support and improve long-term performance.
Careful construction at the beginning helps avoid maintenance issues later.

We typically use heavy-duty hinges and durable gate latches designed to withstand years of use. Additional accessories such as handles, gate stops, and hold-open devices can improve convenience and functionality.
