Choosing the right patio materials is one of the most important decisions in any landscape project. Almost every garden requires some form of hardscape to accommodate outdoor entertaining, seating areas, and foot traffic. Front yards need pathways from the driveway or sidewalk to the front door, while backyard patios create gathering spaces for dining, relaxing, and enjoying the outdoors.
Connecticut bluestone is an excellent patio material
At Details Landscape Art, we begin by designing the size and shape of patios and walkways according to the homeowner’s lifestyle and intended use. Once the layout has been established, we select surface materials that complement both the design and the budget.
Why Material Selection Matters
The cost of a patio or walkway is influenced by three primary factors:
- Size
- Shape
- Surface choice
Before selecting a material, we determine how the area will be used. Will it accommodate a dining table and chairs? A fire pit? Lounge seating? An outdoor kitchen? The intended use helps determine the appropriate size, while the homeowner’s taste and budget help determine the best surface.
There are many beautiful options available, each with its own appearance, installation requirements, and price range.
Concrete Surfaces
Broom-finish, or “swept,” concrete remains one of the most economical hardscape choices available.
The surface is finished with a broom to create a subtle texture that improves traction and provides a clean appearance. Integral color can be added to soften the look and better coordinate with surrounding landscape elements.
Although simple, properly installed concrete can be both attractive and durable.
Stamped Concrete
Stamped concrete offers the appearance of natural stone at a lower cost than many masonry alternatives.

After the concrete is poured, color is applied and worked into the surface. Texture mats are then pressed into the concrete to create patterns and impressions that resemble stone, slate, or other natural materials.
The result is a decorative surface that provides character and visual interest while remaining relatively affordable.
Patio Materials – Brick and Tile
Brick has been used in landscapes for generations and remains especially attractive on homes with traditional architecture or existing brick accents.

Brick walkway
After the base concrete is installed and cured, bricks are mortared into place using patterns such as:
- Running bond
- Herringbone
- Basketweave
Tile is another option, offering an enormous variety of colors, textures, and sizes. Tile surfaces can create anything from a Mediterranean feel to a more contemporary appearance.
Both brick and tile are typically two-stage installation processes and require additional labor compared to standard concrete surfaces.
Flagstone Patios and Walkways
Flagstone remains our specialty at Details Landscape Art and continues to be one of our most requested hardscape surfaces.
Beautiful multi-colored flagstone patio material
Flagstone can be installed on a concrete base or on a compacted aggregate base, depending on the application. Popular choices include a variety of Arizona flagstones as well as Connecticut Bluestone.
The beauty of flagstone lies in its natural variation. No two patios are exactly alike. The colors, textures, and shapes combine to create a timeless appearance that works beautifully in Sonoma County landscapes.
Although flagstone is generally one of the more expensive options, many homeowners feel the finished result is well worth the investment.
Choosing the Right Patio Materials
There is no single best choice for every project.
The ideal material depends on the style of the home, the intended use of the space, maintenance preferences, and budget considerations.
At Details Landscape Art, we help homeowners evaluate the advantages of various patio materials and select surfaces that fit both their lifestyle and the overall landscape design. Whether the choice is concrete, stamped concrete, brick, tile, or flagstone, the goal is always the same: creating beautiful and functional outdoor spaces that will be enjoyed for years to come.
