Hillside landscaping presents some of the most challenging and rewarding projects we undertake at Details Landscape Art. While planting a slope for erosion control is one solution, many homeowners want to create usable outdoor living areas by cutting into the hillside, constructing retaining walls, and building level terraces for gardens, patios, and seating areas.Hillside landscaping with color                               Hillside landscaping with terracing and retaining walls

Throughout Sonoma County, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and the surrounding North Bay, hillside properties require careful planning, proper engineering, and quality construction to ensure both beauty and long-term stability.

Why Hillside Landscaping Is Challenging

Every hillside property presents unique opportunities and challenges.

Unlike flat lots, hillside landscaping often requires:

  • Excavation and grading
  • Heavy equipment
  • Retaining walls
  • Drainage systems
  • Erosion control
  • Building permits
  • Careful engineering

Creating usable, level areas on a steep slope is a significant construction project, but the results can dramatically increase both the beauty and functionality of a property.

Retaining Walls for Hillside Landscaping

Once excavation is complete, retaining walls are constructed to hold back the newly created slope.

At Details Landscape Art, retaining walls are typically built using concrete or concrete block reinforced with steel rebar and filled with concrete for maximum strength. Every retaining wall begins with a properly excavated reinforced concrete footing designed to support the wall above.

The height and thickness of the retaining wall depend upon the amount of soil being retained. Local building departments establish permit requirements, and taller walls often require engineering approval before construction begins.

Once the structural wall is complete, it can be finished with cultured stone or natural flagstone veneer to create an attractive architectural feature that blends beautifully into the landscape.

Seat Walls Add Beauty and Function

Where grades allow, retaining walls approximately eighteen inches high can serve double duty as comfortable seat walls.

Natural flagstone caps are carefully cut to provide a slight overhang on both sides of the wall. We also like to ease or round the edges of the capstones, creating a more comfortable place to sit while giving the finished wall a refined appearance.

Seat walls become attractive gathering places while defining patios, garden terraces, and outdoor living spaces.

Wood Retaining Walls

Not every hillside requires masonry construction.

Wood retaining walls remain an excellent solution for many applications and often provide a more natural appearance.

Pressure-treated posts are installed several feet apart and securely set in concrete. Horizontal lumber is then fastened to the uphill side of the posts using structural screws, which provide greater holding strength than nails. A finished cap along the top of the wall creates a clean, finished appearance and can be stained or left to weather naturally.

Drainage and Erosion Control

Proper drainage is one of the most important elements of successful hillside landscaping.

Without adequate drainage behind a retaining wall, hydrostatic pressure can build up over time, shortening the life of the wall and creating unnecessary structural stress.

After construction is complete, we often install jute erosion-control netting over exposed slopes before planting. An “X” is cut in the fabric wherever a plant is installed, allowing the netting to stabilize the soil while new root systems become established.
