Lawns, shrubs, trees, perennials, vegetable gardens, and sunny or shaded planting areas often have different watering requirements. Separate irrigation valves allow each area to receive the appropriate amount of water without overwatering or underwatering other portions of the landscape.

Why Multiple Irrigation Valves Are Needed

Locating the Irrigation Valves

The first step is selecting a convenient location for the valve assembly.

We typically connect to an existing water source such as a hose bib and position the valves where they remain accessible for future service and maintenance. At the same time, we try to keep the valve area as inconspicuous as possible within the landscape.

The valves are usually grouped together in what is commonly called a valve manifold.

A properly installed manifold provides a neat, organized location for all irrigation valves while allowing easy future expansion if additional zones are ever needed.

Installing the Valve Manifold

The valve manifold distributes water from the main supply line to the individual irrigation zones.

Because portions of the assembly are exposed above ground, we use materials designed to withstand sunlight and weather exposure. Underground piping can utilize standard irrigation materials, while exposed connections require more durable components.

Each irrigation valve controls a separate zone within the landscape. Additional valves can be added whenever different watering schedules are needed.

We often leave room within the manifold for future expansion, allowing homeowners to add irrigation zones if the landscape changes over time.

Wiring the Irrigation Valves

Once the valves are installed, they must be connected to the irrigation controller.

Each valve contains a small electric solenoid that receives signals from the controller. When the controller sends power to a valve, that valve opens and allows water to flow through the irrigation zone.

Irrigation wire connects the valves to the controller.

One wire serves as the common wire shared by all valves, while separate wires connect each individual valve to a corresponding station on the controller.

Proper wire connections are essential for reliable operation. We use waterproof connectors designed specifically for irrigation applications to protect the wiring from moisture and corrosion.

Planning Ahead

Successful irrigation installation requires careful planning before construction begins.

We consider:

  • The location of the controller
  • Electrical access

  • Routing of irrigation wiring
  • Access for future maintenance
